University Preface
The National University, formerly known as the Army War Course (1963-70) and the National Old College (1970-2007), is a military university that holds a distinct position among civilian universities in the Islamic Republic of Pakistan. Throughout its journey, special attention has been paid to the training and education of the armed forces, with more than 200 foreign students from various countries besides Pakistan’s own military forces.
This university was established on May 28, 1970, in Rawalpindi, where it focuses on educational principles, national security, military strategy, and other technical scientific disciplines. It is one of the country’s oldest military education and training institutes, where fresh enrollments are made for government employees.
General Abdul Hameed Khan was its first commander, while Brigadier Muhammad Ahmed was the first star preceptor. The President of the Islamic Republic of Pakistan is traditionally conferred with the title of “Sahib-e-Asraar” (Custodian of Secrets), and the Chief of Staff is entrusted with appointing and removing the President, usually a distinguished officer.
Until March 2007, the NDU operated as a public university in the country. In 2007, the Government of Pakistan upgraded it to the status of a university, while the Naval War College obtained the status of the Armed Forces War College, which is now part of the National Defence University. Two years after its upgrade, the Joint Chiefs of Staff Committee reconstituted the faculty of the Army War Course, Armed Forces War Course, and National Defense Course. They are now known as the National Security and War Course.
